Default Royal Irish Fusiliers - Staybrite

Hi Guys,

Going through all my badges I have found this one.

It is a anodised aluminium item but I need to know if it is a badge or a collar tap.

Size is 41mm high.

Many Thanks.

Regards

Chris

Chris,

I would suggest that it is a kilt badge for the Royal Irish pipers. they wear the antecedent badges including the Inniskillings and RUR.

The collar badges were large coronets.

Its probaly the same as the Fusiliers badge Chris,a kilt badge.Probaly Irish Rangers.Im sure i have a photo somewhere showing a piper wearing all three badges of the founder regiments on their kilt.
Other possibility is that its a sporran/purse badge.

I would agree that it is a kilt badge. They are still in use today so presumably still in production.

I too would suggest kilt badges for the Royal Irish Rangers and subsequently Royal Irish Regiment.

Attached below an anodised RIF cap badge by R.A. Hughes (from my own collection) and the front of the kilt badges (from another's collection)

Gents, for what its worth I quite agree with regards to the sporren badges, would be my suggestion too. Great example of the R.A HUGHES Royal Irish cap badge, by the way. Fairly early maker and badges of a good quality.

Previous to what i said earlier they could well have been used for the sporran at the same time as Bess says.
I dont know if they is any documentation with regard to sporran badges or kilt badges etc.Its probaly a question for the museum or a specialist collector of the appropriate regiment.

Gents

I do not believe they are sporran badges , the R. I Rangers wore the sporran badge shown below. This one is from my own collection - I do not have a picture of the back to hand - it has two screw posts.

The current Royal Irish Regiment wears a sporran badge that resembles the cap badge of the Rangers.

In their post war years 'Skins pipers did not wear a sporran, The RUR wore a pattern identical to the rangers shown below and the RIF did not wear a sporran.

Yep, fair comment about the sporren badges, they do tend to be slightly bigger than usual and probably a bespoke design, so I'm sure your right John. Incidentally I came across a bag of the Inniskilling Fusilers type badge, as pictured by Chris, in a surplus store last year. It is clearly modern issue and also had some all gold and all silver examples too! Needless to say I had the lot! Kilt badges/pins would I suspect be spot on. Equally with the Royal Irish fusiliers designed badge with the vertical lugs too. Belt plate badges would be another suggestion too maybe, but they tend to have the short square type lugs I think.

Hi John,

Can I use your badge in the Infantry web page as I have removed the image there as mine is not a cap badge?

Can you send to:

hagwalther AT gmail DOT com

with a white background if possible and a name to use on the watermark.

Regards

Chris
