Lapels and Collars
South Staffs WW1.jpg
Just a quick observation which probably won't desrve a reply ; but, I notice in Stanley C Jenkin's excellent album on "Infantry & Cavalry Regiments" (p3) he shows a R.Warwickshire bronzed badge with the antelope facing right, expressing the opinion that it is "..presumably an officer's collar badge (although it is full size).." I think I can reassure you that you are correct Stanley. Many regiments did in fact use "full-size" collar badges on OSD lapels, eg. Middx, East Surrey, York & Lancs, and South Staffs etc, (see above). I wonder, do any members know of any others. Jeff |

Jeff,
I listed those examples shown in photographs from a friend of mines collar badge collection ( his name appears in the list of acknowlegements at the begining of Churchills collar badge book) so they are examples which I have seen pictures of,but it has occured to me that there could be others as well of which my friend does not have examples. Peter

This presumably means that, somewhere out there, there must be a host of dragons, harps, horses, sphinxes, etc., which face the "wrong" way on what would otherwise be conventional full-size badges?

OSD Collars
Just an observation to add to 8th Foot's list, I have never seen a full size Beds and Herts OSD collar, the one I have is considerably smaller, they do exist as there is one shown in Churchill's book, but must be quite scarce. The Bedfordshire Regt had full size OSD collars.
The Cambridgeshire Regt wore full size OSD with a separate "T" below. Also worn was a smaller version with a second scroll below the title, with South African honours. Last edited by Sonofacqms; 30-11-08 at 12:18 PM. |

This Sherwood Foresters badge is smaller than a conventional cap badge, but larger and more ornate than most collar badges. I assume it is a late Victorian officer's badge?
