Default Leicestershire re-lugged?

A recent aquisition with a bit of an anomaly. The lugs are very old and have been on this badge for ever. Upon scrutiny of the reverse, it appears to have once had a slider. The remains of the slider braze have aged to appear almost a part of the badge by now.
As can be seen, the badge is a fine old strike with sweat holes in back of both scrolls.
It would appear that some old soldier had a preference for lugs.

CB,

I have a Royal Irish Rifles badge that has had the slider removed and been re-lugged North & South. I remember reading years ago how some soldiers would take their badges to the armourer to have the slider removed and lugs attached. It seems that the badge stayed in the head wear better with lugs and a cotter pin. Sliders would "Slide" out, guess that is why they called them sliders

Default Leicestershire Rgt.

The owner of this badge recently bought would like opinions. He has a strong interest in this regiment and wonders if the head shape is wrong and the body too thin. He has not cleaned it. Cheers, Paul.

From what I can tell by the pics, it appears to be fine. It is always impossible to be sure without actually holding it me own hot hands however, but nothing seems to stand out that is notably wrong here in my opinion.

CB, I can see what he means, there are some things that differ from your badge for example, inc. the face. http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...leicestershire

Wardog,

You do tend to get two head shapes one slightly thinner. Also some have voided & non-voided tails. Thought the flatter shaped head might be a later variation, as my Royal Leicestershire examples have this. However I recently acquired a 1st Vols badge with the flatter shaped head with a Guant plaque mark on it. So possibly the flatter types are Gaunt badges ??? Just a theory.

Heres some other badges.

Will

Some more later badges.

Thanks for the opinions gents. I had noticed a post from Keith Blakeman that mentioned restrike Leicestershire badges among other common badges, that had been found with braze holes, so did not like to say OK myself, only having owned one with a wider face. Cheers for your reply Luke as I guess that gives an OK on the slider. Regards, Paul.

Paul,

The braze holes which I've seen copied are either circular or an oval/ellipse shape. I think you're certainly pretty safe with rectangular braze holes and probably OK with more squarish ones (as present on your friends badge there).

I'm really not a slider expert at all and the slider on this one isn't that nice but it doesn't worry me as the badge was worn till the late 1940's, which that slider could easily be from, its also pretty short which is in keeping with others seen a lot of Leicestershire badges. I gave it OK on the grounds of seeing nothing obviously wrong or suspicous with what is a very common badge, hope that helps.

Cheers,

Luke

Default Leicestershire Regiment: Looking for authentic Great War cap badge

I recently bought this Leicestershire Regiment Cap Badge from an extremely helpful and friendly gentleman through the internet, who believes it to be from the First World War:

After making a posting about things on the Great War Forum, I was directed here in the hope that members might give me their opinions on the authenticity of the badge. Apparently braze/sweat holes are a good sign that a badge is of an early date, but that their absence does not necessarily preclude a badge from being from the period either.

I have no doubt that the badge is a genuine Leicestershire one, but would really like to know if it is likely to be from the Great War or is actually liable to be a later badge. I have seen a badge already posted elsewhere on the Forum that has a verifiable provenance as coming from the First World War, and the style is not the same as this one, though from what I understand this in itself does not have to rule out the above badge from being from the right period.

One thing I have noticed is that what seem to be the genuine First World War badges have a much stockier kind of tiger (looking to me more like a Scottish Wildcat than a Bengal Tiger!), whereas the one I’ve posted is more lithe in its appearance.

Regards

Martin

Hello Martin. Nice to see you here. Hello JP, your Grandfather's badge is the one Martin mentions as having verifiable provenance as it is known to date from the First World War. Martin is very keen to find out about Leicestershire badges from that period if anyone can add further. Cheers, Paul.
