Alan,
The problem is , is that this frame was constructed 1899 - 1900? regards

P.S - I was also intrigued by the fact that his daughter cleaned the badges in 1988 , she must have been a good age.

Hello Simon,
On the face of it, certainly a handsome collection, what sort of frame is it, I take it the frame was glazed and you have inspected each piece, from the photographs, they do all appear good examples. I don't understand the need to actually clean them, badges that were new in 1899 and then glazed may well tone on the obverse, but, so often each reverse can remain in a mint state. Regards Frank. |

They were in a very hand made glazed frame which was falling to pieces.
She has obviously used brasso as the residue is on the fronts, I will use a sonic cleaner to loosen it off and lightly brush in water, usually tidies them up without any damage. PS. After using a strong magnifier on the Leicesters badge I queeried earlier I feel it may have once had a scroll on top. regards

Okay, well that's very typical and what I would expect one hundred and twenty years or so down the line, it is nice for you to have it, try and keep it as found, this sort of thing used to turn up forty years ago, sadly, it does not do these days, I would be quite pleased if I were you.

Yes a nice Victorian OR's cap star. Let us know how much you want for it, if your selling that is.

That's good and certainly contemporary to the other badges in the frame, a lot of people would just look and see another star, but, those had all disappeared by 1914.
It's a shame the badges have been subjected to the brasso type thing. |

As an aside (sorry!) Is there any chance of a "before" and "after" set of photos of a couple of badges cleaned this way please? I am considering an ultra sonic cleaner in addition to the usual way I clean things so I'd be very interested to see the outcome.
