Unknown Officer Portrait
Hi have been asked if I could find out who this Potrait is off, The Photo is apparently with him centre but Medal ribbons aren't the same?
Have posted loads of pictures from the photo as some of tgese Officers may be of interest to some? It is only 5 years till the start of the war! Many thanks in advance, billy |

I am not sure if it is him though as he should have the ribbons of the Q.S.A & the K.S.A. but the nose is very similar.

Am amazed at what information is garnered on the Forum! So he has served in the 1st WW then moved over to Ireland, Q.S.A. (Queens South Africa medal?), K.S.A. (Kings South Africa medal?), I know nothing on Medals I'm afraid to admit!

Medals ID'd in later posts so edited this rambling speculative one.

I'm reading the ribbons as Distinguished Service Order and bar (silver rose emblem), Africa General Service Medal, 1914 Star with clasp (silver rose emblem), British War Medal and Victory Medal with Mention in Despatches emblem (bronze oak leaves emblem).

That blow up didn't show or wasn't up earlier, but the ribbon red centre is too thin to be a DSO, but I agree with the Africa GSM now I see it's green stripes.

Yes, I'm just thinking the first ribbon may be DSO, just the artist has the ratio of red / blue a bit out.

The “incomplete” badge of rank is that of a Brigadier General; this rank/appointment disappeared in 1921. Holders were then given the option of being Colonels on the Staff, or retiring, as a former General Officer.
The rank of Brigadier came in 1928, and was the “senior” Rank of Field Officers. |

The first ribbon is CMG.

Which would be Companion of The Order of St Michael and St George?

So, Brigadier General, CMG, African GSM, 1914 star, War & Victory medals. Should be identifiable now?

If he's the officer in the centre of the group photo, shown as a younger man and before he was awarded his "Right Marker" CMG or whatever, who is he named as?
(Trying to suss that out on a phone hasn't been working for me). |

Also of interest is that one of the ‘founding fathers’ of Airborne Forces is in the group photograph named as Lt J F Rock RE
