Default Judge's cut steel court dress button

Following the most interesting thread about Victorian prison buttons, which highlighted how the local prisons were inextricably tied up with the court structure of those days, I thought it might be interesting (if nothing more than to complete the Assize "set") to show an original cut steel court dress button, worn by assize judges in the early Victorian period. These were worn with a court suit, underneath scarlet and ermine robes, or a black silk gown, with full bottomed wig, on ceremonial occasions. This particular button dates from about 1840.
