Default Dagger Placement

Hi,

Quick question; On CS95 and the previous patterns of uniform, where is the Commando dagger placed in relation to the TRF/Formation sign?

I've seen it placed on the left arm and TRF/DZ on the right with Wings and other times on the right with Wings and TRF/DZ, which is correct?

Just something that has baffeled me for a while.

Cheers
Rory

If you mean the Army Commando qualification badge, left sleeve only, however the 3rd Commando Brigade Formation Badge has been worn on both sleeves at various time. As the Formation Badge is now worn on the left sleeve the qualification badge has been replaced by the shoulder designation ARMY COMMANDO worn at the top of both sleeves.

So left arm, great thanks, that's cleared it up.

When did the Title replace the Dagger? and it wasn't always worn on the left sleeve was it? I'm sure on a photo from the 70's there is one being worn on a jumper on the right

Another two questions

Is the 14 Sigs TRF worn on the right or left? and the Cyprus Signals flashes, are they left or right?

Top of the Left sleeve from day 1, wings are on the right. With out looking it up the ARMY COMMANDO was worn when the Formation Badge was placed on the left sleeve (can not have 2 daggers on one sleeve). However when the MTP PCS CU was introduced the ARMY COMMANDO designation was one of the badge allowed to be worn sewn directly to the material.

With the introduction of the RSignals TRF no other badges should be worn, again some units continue to wear them above or below the RSignals TRF on the right sleeve.

TRFs on the right and Formation Badges on the left below the Union Flag emblem.

Of course all this does depend on the time frame you are talking about.

Default Dagger

Just to confirm what Marc has already summarised: The Army badge donating Commando qualification (red dagger on black triangular segment) has always been worn on the left upper sleeve on shirts, DPM smocks and the old heavy duty green pullover, as well as on No.2 Dress. The Army badge was introduced in 1972 and was, of course, a copy of the World War Two formation sign worn by both Army and RM Commandos on both sleeves of battledress from late 1944 until the demise of that form of dress in the 1960s. This use continued when CS95 came out.

The confusion started when the Royal Marines re-introduced the red dagger as their formation sign in the late 1990s, worn on the left sleeve of DPM combat dress under the 'ROYAL MARINES COMMANDO' shoulder title. This has now been replaced by the 3 Commando Brigade TRF (black dagger on olive green square) normally worn on the right sleeve of DPM smocks and shirts below the shoulder titles and wings. Note this is a formation badge which is also worn by Army ranks who serve with the Commando Brigade but it does not denote Commando qualification. When the ISAF badge is worn on the right sleeve in Afghanistan, the TRF can be moved to the left sleeve. For Commando qualified Army ranks the natural preference would be to wear the qualification badge rather than the TRF - I've never seen both worn together on the left sleeve.

However, the new Army regulations specify that on all MTP combat clothing any Army Commando qualification will be denoted by shoulder titles reading 'ARMY COMMANDO' and that the Dagger qualification badge will now only be worn on No.2 Dress.

Regards,

Colin S
