Default WW1 1918 RAF Service Dress cap badge but not made by Gaunt?

Hi,

I recently purchased this scarce WW1 1918 RAF Service Dress cap badge & with the seller's photographs provided, I assumed it was made by JR Gaunt.

Upon receiving the badge, I was surprised to not see the classic JR Gaunt plaque to the rear but another maker instead?

A previous seller's price tag also partly obscures the maker's mark unfortunately, but I would rather not remove it. (I wish I had paid $5 for it in anyone's currency!).

It looks like it reads something like "Lamb..."& the second line may start with "Eng..." England?

Does anyone recognise the maker at all please?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Best regards,
David

Fascinating badge David, I’ll give you $10 for it, doubling its value

Can’t say I’ve ever seen that particular construction previously.

There’s a good thread on Lambourne’s at

https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ad.php?t=82798

Great badge, thanks for showing it

I agree with Simon.

If the sticker were carefully removed I expect it to read either:

Lambourne & Co
Birmingham

Or

Lambourne’s
Birmingham

If 1918 in date probably the latter mark.

Thank you all for your responses.

Lambourne is not a maker I have encountered before & the link to the thread was a brilliant read with some really great & fascinating research!

It seems this is a rarer maker for these 1918 RAF cap badges, so that's an additional bonus. This badge was bought in Australia too.

I think I may try & get a hair dryer onto the sticker carefully as something like that will be required to budge it. It is set like glue & I do not want to remove any paint in the process. I think if I can get to the top right of the Lambourne part, at least, all will be revealed with a 'Co' or an apostrophe 's'.

Thank you all again.

Best regards,
David

The back of the badge is bowl shaped so maybe try putting a few drops of water on the label and let it soak, may be enough to lift it off.
Cheers,
Alex
