I thought they had done quite well until I saw the colonel in his beret. An actor in a beret is not, generally, a pretty sight!
Mind you when I was first issued with mine at Dartmouth in 1971 I shrank it down and wore it in what I believed to be the approved manner, badge over the left eye, band parallel to the ground one inch above eyebrow (Well nearly I don't have all that much forehead) and spare material pulled downto the right hand side. The duty river officer took one look at me and said "Oh no, no". He then grabbed hold of the back of it and pulled it down almost to my hairline so that the band rested on my ears. I had several more clashes with authority over it during my time there.
Seeing naval officers and ratings aound in recent years I detect that things have much improved since my day.
