Default WW1 MN Torpedo badge is it or isn't it?

In the first image is a Torpedo badge awarded to to the Mercantile Marine / Merchant Navy to those attacked by Uboats during WW1. (the bottom badge)
Bars were awarded for further attacks. After 5 attacks the bars are removed and a star is worn above the Torpedo badge.

My Question is: Is the Top badge the MN Torpedo Badge & Star or an early RN ratings Torpedo branch badge?

Also attached is original instructions for wear and a Gold wire badge and Bar.
I look forward to any comments.

Regards

Default Torpedo badge

The Torpedo Badge & Star could be the only badge a Seaman didn't want to earn !!!

The short answer is no.
Your badge, with the star above the horizontal torpedo, is a Seaman Torpedo Man Other Ratings, pattern X134A
Woven badges of this nature were introduced during WW2.

These are my Mercantile Marine Torpedo badges.

Just out of curiosity, is there a reason for the notch in the torpedo?

I think it was to give the design some context.
