Searching through 153RAC’s war diary, the Essex history and their box at Bovington I’ve been unable to find any corroborating evidence for a badge backing on the beret.

Thankyou very much for your reply. I have only seen one photo of a squaddie from 153, and the detail was not good enough to make anything out. It seems you had a thorough search! Thanks again. Richard.

I stand to be corrected but the 1st Dragoons wore the lone eagle in brass or the lion, crown and scroll badge depending on what year it was in WW2. Your design was post war I think.

I can't answer that (I too would be interested to know) but Alan's earlier post (#58) was intriguing - the journal article states 153rd wearing a "Pompadour red flash on the sleeve" (my italics). I would have expected purple..
