Default Edward the 8th VIII

Hi,

maybe I am being blonde, but, here goes anyway. Having looked through books and looked on the forum/net, i can find no evidence of any cap badges with the cypher of Edward VIII. Do any exist? I know he was only king for a year, but that must be long enough to have a badge made.

regards

phil

Phil,
ER VIII badges definitely exist and the badges appeal to both military and non military collectors. If the royal coat of arms, as worn by WOs etc. I am afraid that I cannot help.

Here it is again Phil next to the ORs version.

One is I'm 99% certain a fake which I paid £6 for. If you want an original you will have to dig deep.

Which one is the fake? (Sorry no reverse images at present)

Ry

i would say the first badge is the repro, due to lack of voiding and a seemingly less detailed finish. please bear in mind im viewing on a mobile screen atm.

thanks cftd, im grateful for that. info is squirreled away for when i start on cavalry badges. im guessing that they are expensive too?

cheers guys

phil

Correct Phil, although the lack of voiding is correct for the ORs pattern. It is quite a nice badge in the hand and had some age before I polished it. A passable gap filler only though.

In my experience it is the voided EVIII RE ORs badge that is fake. It uses an officers voided design and can be found on ebay in abundance.

The GV and the GVI ORs' badges were also solid.

Royal Horse Artillery Cypher as worn by "E" Bty, and a different design by "G" Bty, both in India, and thus out of sight of stricter UK regulation!

Hi Gents,

One of these fake EVlllR examples was one of the first RE badges that I bought from EBay way back before I even new that fake badges existed.

It was as Alan states based on the OSD badge but with a slider. It wasn't expensive so I don't think sold to deceive but became a valuable pointer to spotting a fake badge, the slider bearing the fake Gaunt "dot" London MM.

I know that fake RE OSDs also exist so even if it looks convicing caution must be applied when purchasing. A sign to look for is excessive spacing to the voiding between the laurels and the centre of the badge.

Regards to all

Ry

Would these be theatre-made cast brass examples ? I don't believe I have ever seen a die struck example of EVIIIR RHA. Always learning (and not afraid to admit it) David

For interest, the attached RE badge was bought from Bosleys in 2006 and sold as the actual badge photographed as 1939 in KK. The leaves are not voided.

The badge next to it is another example of an EVIIIR. This time the National Defense Company which was mentioned by Phil.

I'd also like to see images of other EVIIIR if members have them.

Cheers

Mark
