RTR beret
Good afternoon,
I have received this week this black RTR beret with a regimental plume. It is not a Heavy Cavalry & Cambrai band beret, because no gold bands. Any suggestion welcome. Laurent |

The wm QC cap badge is the earlier version of the QC, 50's/60's.

The code CT3B/1643 indicates that the beret was manufactured around 1979-1985.

Is the hackle fitted back to front?
Cheers Tony.

I wondered but kept quiet as I wasn't sure, I always forget which way it should be and have to check, photos of serving soldiers sometimes show them the wrong way around.
The feathers being a little "fluffed" could indicate front, the reverse on the hackles I have being absolutely flat on the back. Through mud, blood, green fields..... does that follow left to right as viewed from the front, or right to left, following the tank's direction. |

Here I am (on left) wearing the RTR 'best' beret with hackle and wide headband. Catterick late 1969.
Hackle should be right to left - brown - red - green. The 'best' beret with hackle was discontinued in the late 1970s. Tim

Some best berets from the early 1960's - all with the hackle the wrong way around?

Yes, as you said, the hackle should follow the tank!

RTR Dress Beret
Laurent,
What you have is an "Other Ranks" working beret (slightly mothed) that has been adapted to take a Hackle. As stated the hackle is presented correctly with Brown Red And Green running forward in the direction of travel of the tank. "Through Mud, through Blood to the Green fields Beyond". As was common practice the plastic, which covered the makers information and beret size, has been removed. I cannot comment on what it may have been used for but was never worn in my Regiment in that form during my service.......1972 - 1992. Attached a photo of an RTR SNCO wearing his Dress Beret correctly. OIP.jpg |
