Have you found the elusive badge this year.
The forum is a wonderful resource for the fascinating interest that consumes us all. Often we see pleas for badges that have eluded us. Nice to read too when someone comes across that elusive badge and is able to complete a set. I thought it might be interesting to see how many of us had finally had the satisfaction of finding what appeared to be a ‘holy grail’ or what they regard as their prize buy of 2021.
I have searched in vain for over 7 years for two badges….the first was the 1917;Hartlepool Bombardment badge….the second was my holy grail. I had given up hope of getting one but I finally (tears in my eyes at the size of the auctioneers commission) found and bought a Victorian Gilt Officer Helmet Plate for The Durham Light Infantry. Even better, my beloved wife presented me on my birthday with a Gilt Victorian Somerset Light Infantry Helmet plate in perfect condition. The 1917 badge for Hartlepool surfaced on a dealer site…..I paid way over what I should …..but wow, what a year. I hope that someone has smiled on you all and pointed you in the direction of the badge you seek. I would also like to say a huge heartfelt ‘thank you’ to all of those members of the forum who have gone out of their way to help, advise and in many cases for their generosity. Thank You so much, and as Christmas is fast approaching I hope you have a very enjoyable and safe Christmas time even under the present circumstances. You all go safe. Cheers James

Thats brilliant James,so glad to hear that youve had 3 successes not just the one. Thats the way it works sometimes. I always say that when you have a wedge in your wallet you never find anything, when your broke items you want and popping up like mole hills on your lawn.
I hope you will have something very nice to show us all early next year Griff. They say success breeds success,so i will add to it. At the end of last month i found something i thought would elude me. It was very high on my wanted list. A very early belt plate to the Rifle Brigade, dated 1821-1822. |

'Most wanted' badge 2021
I actually did manage to get a 'most wanted' this year; after getting a brass Eritrea Prison Service cap badge last year a tip from a fellow Forum member, to whom I am most grateful, enabled me to win an auction lot including a white metal EPS cap badge and a pair of shoulder titles to add to my collection. So all-in-all a good year - I hope others have faired as well.

Very glad to hear your hattrick of elusive badges James.
Personally the most satisfying thing about 2021 has been completing (for my purposes) three of my collecting themes: 1916 all GM issue Cavalry, King’s Colonials and Royal Naval Division with the below. Tips of the hat to forum members billy and manchesters. Merry Christmas to all and happy collecting in 2023. |

Some nice pieces there Luke and many thanks for your best wishes.
Here’s hoping that the New Year will bring the one that continues to elude me…..or rather when I have the money I never see the badge…..when I am stoney broke, up one pops…….the badge of course is the Leinster EI……..one day money and badge will appear together…lol. Cheers James

Thanks James. Did a 1916 all GM Leinster pop up? Must’ve missed seeing that one. You will get one mate, they’re definitely out there.

Unfortunately I have a zealous bank manager who vigorously waves his bottle of red ink at me whenever I walk past the bank………..nice chap and appears to be a jolly fellow. Whenever I suggest taking out a bank loan he falls over laughing!
