Default Harvey's List

A bit of nostalgia.

Does anyone know what became of the Essex based badge dealer Reg Harvey who used to provide a badge sales list on subscription? I know in later years the list was distributed by a chap in Yorkshire who sadly died, what was his name?

Many thanks, Keith

The badges on Harvey’s List were being sold on behalf of other people, if you had stuff for sale you received an early copy of the list and of course if you didn’t most of the good stuff had been sold by the time the list arrived.

One well know badge dealer and author on RA insignia always had stuff for sale on the list and consequently a lot of his new stock came from the List.

Reg died many years ago , I seem to remember reading an orbituary but can’t remember where.

The List was sold on twice after Reg died, firstly to a man in Beverley called Wilson ( can’t immediately remember his first name but he did write a booklet on one of the Yorkshire TA battalions and various articles in Crown Imperial.

The next person to run the list was based outside York but I can’t even remember his surname.

Despite not often getting early copies of the list, I did get some great items from it.

The chap from Acomb in York was Ray Spowage. He has a stall most months at the Outwood Fair at Wakefield

The items on Harvey’s List were great when I first started getting the list but it depended on people sending him good genuine items for sale and unfortunately the items were drying up as time went by.

On reflection one of the funniest things that happened to me was that I bought an all white metal Kings Liverpool badge from the list and on it arriving something didn’t look quite right. I gave it a good rub and it turned out to be a bi metal badge with the scroll treated with wipe on silver solution.

I told Reg and when he spoke to the Vendor, the vendor apparently went crazy and said I had no right to do that to the badge, poor Reg really got it in the neck and I left the matter and didn’t return the badge to save further embarrassment to Reg.

Reg had a reputation for being rather grumpy but was always OK with me.

Living in Essex I would visit Reg at his bungalow in Clacton.

He had a large collection of holocaust & concentration camp memorabilia and photographs. His reason for collecting was to demonstrate to the doubters the brutality and cruelty of the nazi regime. I believe he gave lectures on the subject.

I bought some wonderful items from Reg that I wish I had kept. Several come to mind: a Napoleonic cross belt plate of the Loyal Colchester Fencibles; Number 2 Commando officers uniform with beret; RFC officers tunic with cap and leather gauntlets, etc.

I never met Roy Wilson, although I recall several lengthy phone conversations with him. A really nice chap who went out of his way to find items for me.
