WWI and WWII Medal Ribbon rack Help
Hi Team
Can you help out as I have no clue or understanding of ribbons or in what precedence they should be in. I have the above ribbon racks; they were part of a militaria collection won from UK Ebay. My question is when do you think these were put together ie 1920's-40's or 1960's and later? Why is there two different Width 14mm and 10mm? The ribbons are not in order or at least should they be? I will put these in my databased collection but would like more opinions and knowledge as I think these are cool to have in my collection. The middle one has a MM ribbon and the dye started to discolour and the 1914-1918 Star ribbon is upside down. Below is the reaserch so far: The Top is British and commonwealth WWI Ribbon large ribbon rack 14mm Note ribbons hand sewn to affix onto Brass rack 1914-18 Star Ribbon "PIP" WWI British/Commonwealth War Ribbon "Squeek" Victory Medal Ribbon "Wilfred" Territorial Force WWI War Medal Ribbon The middle: British and commonwealth WWI Ribbon Note Ribbons glued on to metal rack 1914-18 Star Medal Ribbon "PIP" Military Medal Ribbon WWI British/Commonwealth War Ribbon "Squeek" Victory Medal Ribbon "Wilfred" Bottom: British and commonwealth WWII Ribbon Note small ribbon rack 10mm Africa Star Medal Ribbon Aie Efficiency Medal cheers Phill |

The first one is totally spurious, a soldier could not be awarded both the 1914-15 star and Territorial Force War Medal

Hi Paul
Thanks for your input , however this is from Great War UK site, again any help, good bad or indifferant in verifying the rack is what Im looking for. The Territorial Force War Medal, 1914-1919 The front of the Territorial Force War Medal. Instituted on 26th April 1920. Only members of the Territorial Force and Territorial Force Nursing Service were only eligible for this medal. They had to have been a member of the Territorial Force on or before 30th September 1914 and to have served in an operational theatre of war outside the United Kingdom between 5th August 1914 and 11th November 1918. An individual who was eligible to receive the 1914 Star or 1914/15 Star could not receive the Territorial War Medal. The obverse (front) of the medal shows an effigy of King George V with the words GEORGIVS BRITT OMN:REX ET IND: IMP: The reverse of the Territorial Force War Medal. The reverse of the medal has the words TERRITORIAL WAR MEDAL around the rim, with a laurel wreath and the words inside the wreath FOR VOLUNTARY SERVICE OVERSEAS 1914-1919. Approximately 34,000 Territorial Force War Medals were issued. cheers Phill |

As the mount of the first bar is longer than the ribbons on it, maybe the last ribbon could be the Africa General Service Medal, similar central colours with more.

My thoughts :
Rack 1 : combination of ribbons not possible i.t.o. regulations, as already explained. Rack 2 : perfectly possible, but first two ribbons are the wrong way round. Rack 3 : also back to front; combination is possible if mounted between 1943 and 1945, but one might expect some additional ribbons, e.g. 1939-45 Star or War Medal, to have been added after 1945. The usual height is 10mm (3/8in). I wonder if the 14mm bar that rack 1 is mounted on was intended for ribbons, or whether it was actually made for mounting the medals themselves.

MM should have precedence as it's a Gallantry award and the 1914-15 Star ribbon should have the colours as red/white/blue.

Hi Team
Thanks for all the input and education on the ribbon racks. As to why I put the Territorial Force medal information was due to lack of knowledge on the subject of ribbons and how and why they were issued. My asumption was that the reason it was on the rack was due to a build up of the British army and the specific use of individuals within the Terrirtorial Force that the regular army needed to second personnel like nursing servicies and that the individual had qualified for the use of the ribbon. Anyway really appreciate all the comments. If there are any after thoughts please add. cheers Phill |
