Thank you for that....i have now managed to track down the same badge in a picture on the internet.....but that one is attached to a belt buckle with no other information other than Austro - Hungarian, so at least now I am on the right track thanks to your help.
Regards, Jim.

Perhaps this might help. For now, I would estimate its earliest date to the late 19th Century (c. 1890s). Some similar badges are seen at the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum, Vienna.

I may be wrong, but now leaning towards this badge as having been removed from a belt buckle. I think anything worn on the helmet would have been much bigger than this one, as per the pictures shown. Any other thoughts on this ?

Could be. The only brass belt plates I've seen have been one piece stampings, the badge hasn't been attached, but I don't know much about them.

There are plenty of examples of exactly the same badge stamped on "Austro Hungarian belt buckles" on the internet....but no examples of one as a separate badge, so I am still looking to pinpoint what this was or is.
