The Charge at Beersheba
Hello All,
Being an ex Cavalry man, I thought I'd post about an important event in Australian Military History - the charge at Beersheba on 31st October, 1917. Today is the 98th anniversary of the charge! At Beersheba the 4th Light Horse Brigade's bold charge against Turkish positions at Beersheba, seized a critical wells that enabled British empire forces to break the Ottoman line near Gaza and advance into Palestine. More info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle...ersheba_(1917) None of this Halloween nonsense today - it's Beersheba Day (and celebrated as such by the Royal Australian Armoured Corps)! Have attached pics of the charge (most likely a re-enactment in early 1918) and pics of some unofficial badges for by the 4th and 12th Light Horse Regiments. Charge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Mick

"They were madmen; not soldiers" Quote attributed to a captured German staff officer.
I would have thought "magnificent" to have been a better description. |

Just had a revelation with this famous Battle...... XX Corps advance on Beersheba saw the 74th (Yeomanry) Division in the middle of the advance. On the Divisions right flank was the 25th (Montgomery & Welsh Horse Yeomanry) Battalion RWF and the 24th (Denbighshire Hussars Yeomanry) Battalion RWF, with the 24th (Pembroke and Glamorgan Yeomanry) Battalion The Welsh, in reserve.
The 24th (Denbighshire Hussars Yeomanry) Battalion RWF started at the "Surrey Wadi" and alone took 27 men killed in action on that day (x23 Fusiliers and x4 DHY.... one of the DHY died of wounds a week later). The 25th Btn RWF had as many killed as well. They were facing the 27th Division (Turks) that composed of the 81st Infantry Regiment and the 67th Infantry Regiment. If your interested in all aspects of the battle then read this bit on the 24 & 25th Btns RWF..... a VC was won in the 25th Btn on this day http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/fo...owtopic=138235

Griff.
If your want to show a 74th Div sign, here's one for you (not good photo, but okay) Glam Yeo one as black, WH would be green. The oldman knew someone who was there with the Glam Yeo, had to go around shooting injured horses as he was a farrier sgt. Jonathan. P5060101.jpgP5060104.jpg |

Sorry no photos and as his name was William Jones he might be a bit difficult to find in a Welsh Regiment as we have no idea of his number.. |

errrrr.... I think I found him I know there is no death recorded on the MIC but that is common. Do you know where he died in France (31st Div) ? I think the most dangerous stint was at MESSINES in September 1918. They had previously been in the NIEPPE FOREST, in August, and took a few casualties there.

24th (DHY) Battalion Insignia...
On the steel helmet it was the size of the Pagri flash but worn as the sleeve. (yes they did have the steel helmet, I have images) * The DHY wore their own cap badge in the forage cap and the RWF wore their own.
