Grove MFG Bham Royal Northumberland Fusiliers
Hi all
I believe this is not a good one. It's a bi metal Royal Northumberland Fusiliers cap badge, the letters are not serif around the St George, which I've been told, by a reliable source, that this is not good. Found this one though with a makers mark, is it good or bad at the end of the day? Thank you for time Chris |

I have an exact stamp (on a 1950 King's badge) which I believe to be genuine.
However, I rather think that your badge and the stamp look new brand new! For what's it worth here's notes on that company... They are recorded in Birmingham telephone books at 234 Great King Street from 1933 to 1958. In 1933 they are described as Grove Mfg. Co, Clasps but from 1935 they are Grove Manufacturing Company Limited; smallwares. In December 1962 their business was described as ‘button makers’ but the reference is that liquidators were appointed. |

The font on the letters looks like one that Gaunt used on anodised badges.

Thank you both.
Actually, I recently received an anodised Smith and Wright RNF, out of all the anodised this is the only one without the letters being serif. The Gaunt, Firmin, and unmarked slider are all serif, I think this maybe a copy of the Smith & Wright anodised badge. It's an odd one. Chris |

I would not assume the badge to be bad just because it looks new. It is not very old if genuine and until further information regarding the mark comes forth, worth holding on to.

I can't comment on the badge in your original post, but with regard to the advice you've received that without serifs on the Quo Fata Vocant lettering, it's a bad one - what do you think of the one on the right? It has a Firmin London slider (which looks right to me), but no serifs on the letters. Hooky? Cheers Mark Last edited by dubaiguy; 05-08-21 at 07:02 PM. |

Thanks all for your replies, greatly appreciated.
I think I've come to the conclusion it's not good. Interesting Firmin badge Mark, I think mine is with Serifs, and the only one without is my Smith & Wright, I'll have to check my Firmin! If mine has Serifs then it's another one to get!! I'll let you know Chris |

Hi Mark
My observation skills are clearly declining! I've got my Firmin badge out it too like yours has no serifs. The no Serifs apply to the bi metal badge being fake, I think the dies were used from the anodised ones. I've never seen a bi metal with a makers mark though, hence the question. So the anodised Smith and Wright, and the Firmin have no serifs, the Gaunt and the blank slider have Serifs. A good spot, just pleased I don't have to find another anodised example! Has anyone else got any thoughts on the Grove marked badge?
As I've said I think it's not good, but it might just be one of those oddities that crop up now and then. Cheers all Chris |

Also, probably not much help on your Grove metal example, but I have a similar metal one without serifs, bright modern finish and a blank slider that I don't consider right. Cheers Mark |

Thanks Mark for your reply, and no worries for the diversion.
Denis Woods 5th Fusiliers book, in the notes it says, made by Firmin, Gaunt, Smith and Wright, and an unmarked slider. I have an unmarked slider anodised badge, which has seen a lot of service wear by the look of it, and it's definitely an unmarked one. If that's not mentioned, maybe the Firmin has been missed as well? Chris |
