Default India opium department

Hello everyone,

There used to be an Opium Department in India in colonial days. If i recall correctly, George Orwell's father worked for them in Bihar.

Has anyone ever seen or know of a badge or button to the department? I have a button to the Bombay Salt Department and it occurred to me that there might be a badge/button to the Opium Department as well..

Thanks,
Sunil

I saw a travel documentary recently where some intrepid traveller visited the the opium factory somewhere in India, I forget where but it might have been somewhere near Cawnpore (Kanpur). It is apparently the very same factory that we built but now supplies the Indian state with all its opiate requirements.

Cawnpore- Ghazipur. I doubt that there are many in England who would know the significance of either place these days.

I think the traveller was Michael Portillo on his railway journey across India.

I was racking my brains, I had thought it was Simon Reeve or Sue Perkins, but you are right, it was Portillo.

It seems strange that the BBC keeps making the same programme with different people. I think that Chris Tarrant had a go for the other side as well.

Why invest in new story ideas when you can file the serial numbers off, add a coat of paint and sell the same show to a new audience as 'fresh television'?
