Default NSW Lancers but what is it?

hi all
i have what i believe is something from a saddle or equipment of the NSW Lancers.
as you can see, the badge attached is a smaller version of the hat badge. never seen one that size before
can anyone confirm what it is

I’ve never seen a NSW Lancers cap badge in the flesh so have no idea how big either item is.

My first impressions were maybe it’s a brush holder? But as Keith alludes maybe it’s actually far smaller than I supposed.

May well be a match box holder.

I'll ask around the NSW Lancers Museum when I go there next.

thanks
I doubt a match box holder as it has leather to the rear and leather insert and nowhere to strike the match.
the badge is obviously made for the item, being about 30% smaller than the hat badge version which indicates to me an official item and not made up.
the leather also leads me to think a bridle or stirrup item?
there was also a suggestion to mount a sword however there are no rings for further attachment?

The Lancers Museum has a wide range of badged objects like this one. They must have had badges all over them. I think that it is for a stirrup of bridle
but hopefully Mick can tell us for sure.

Sadly a lot of the badges there at the museum were 'misplaced' and can't be found.

I'll ask around about this one when I'm next there.
