Royal Artillery-Possibly shako plate .KK. 801. To be confirmed

I am wondering about the date of use, and on what type of headdress or other equipment this plate would have been worn. Looking at Kipling & King Number 801, this badge appears to be very similar to the one indicated for the bell-topped shako of 1839 to 1846. There are slight variations from the plate illustrated, notably in the design of the crown. It measures 12.5 cm (5 inches) high X 9.5 cm (3 3/4 inches) wide. It strikes me as a bit small for a bell-topped shako, as indicated, hence this enquiry. A British one-pound coin is placed beneath picture 1 for quick reference.

It is made of gilding metal and the face is well gilded. The cannon and "UBIQUE" scroll are separately applied with three and two, respectively, short, folded-over, retaining pins. There are two retaining wire loop lugs in the east and west positions, centred on the reverse for attachment.

I agree that it is a quality piece. They sure produced amazingly exquisite pieces back then. Now to chase the actual use and type of headdress for it's wear to ground. The mission continues.

I've seen a similar plate described as an NCO's RA Shako plate for a Bell Topped, Shako.

You may be right. The only reference that I can find is Kipling and King 801 which illustrates the star (with pebbling to the rays) as the officer pattern for the bell-topped shako 1846-1855. K & K 801A describes the Other Ranks pattern as very similar but with plain rays to the star and in brass. It is possible that an NCO (Sgt-plus ?) could have a plate more elaborate, multi-piece construction, than the standard issue OR and heavily gilded, as here. Any reference would be most welcome, if available. Thank you.
