Hi,
I am trying to identify these buttons. I believe they are "Generic Issue - 2nd Pattern Royal Artillery button, Officer & O/R's - 1790-1802" but am not 100% certain. I'm also interested if anyone knows how long after the issue date they may have remained in use, as they may help in dating a context in an archaeological dig. Thanks in advance for any help that can be given. |

Hi
Welcome to the Forum! Flat buttons of that pattern were the standard Royal Artillery button from c. 1785 - 1802. It's impossible to give a precise date. Officers buttons were gilt, O/R's buttons were brass. Convex buttons of the same pattern were worn by Honourable East India Company Artillery units at a later date, probably until c. 1840's/1850's. The RA introduced a new pattern button c. 1802 but the old buttons would probably have been phased out over a period of time. David Last edited by davidwyke; 17-09-16 at 05:22 PM. |
