Default 107th Kerry Militia Button

Hello Chaps,

Well hot on the heals of the 112th South Down Militia button of yesterday, is another Irish button for your interest and enjoyment. Again my knowledge is sadly lacking but I believe this latest addition is a 107th Kerry Militia large tunic button by Jennens. Not perfect condition but very I feel a very respectable example.

Cheers, Roy.

Roy

This is one after my own heart.

As you know formed as the 14th or Kerry Regiment of Militia in 1783. Retitled the “107th Kerry Rgt of Militia” in the 1833 reforms. Headquartered in Tralee.

It became the 4th Battalion The Royal Munster Fusiliers in 1881 and in 1908 they were re-designated 3rd Battalion The Royal Munster Fusiliers , flip-flopping numbers with the original 3rd R.M.F. (South Cork Light Infantry Militia) which assumed the number 4.

The reason for the re-numbering was first notified in A/O 50 of 1900 when the War Office planned to raise 2 additional regular battalions for The Royal Munster Fusiliers. Thus the numbers 3 & 4 were to be vacated by the militia battalions for these proposed new battalions.

The plan was not proceeded with and was cancelled by A/O 110 OF 1900. When the dust had settled 3 & 4 Bns had swapped places. The 5th Bn remaining unaltered.

The unit remained active till 1922.

If anyone has a copy of A/O 50 of 1900 I would love to see it.

John

Hi John,

Sterling information as always. You're a mine of great information..

A lovely button but you know I will be on the lookout for a pre 1833 example - maybe one day..!

Cheers, Roy.
