The first Birks store was opened in what was then downtown Montreal,on 222, St James St. on 1 March 1879. Then in 1874, the store was moved to Phillips Square.... Other stores were opened, in Ottawa in 1901,Winnipeg in 1903, Vancouver in 1907....A Royal Warrant was granted to "La Maison Birks" in 1934.... In 1991,Jonathan Birks sold the company to the commercial group of Dr.Lorenzo Rossi di Montelera. Today, the store is still doing business at the Phillips Square location..... Courtesy of; Birks Jewelers website. P.S. Commencing in 1901, Birks oversaw the expansion of the company across Canada, with stores opening in the country's largest cities. In some cases, it bought local jewellers, adding its name to the local one. For instance the Birks store in Toronto was Birks-Ryrie (c.1905) and the one in Winnipeg was Birks-Dingwall (1933). In 1953, Henry Birks and Sons bought out Roden Bros. Ltd., a company that produced silver hollowware, flatware, cut crystal, and medals.
