14th Regt...What period?
Is anyone able to tell me in what period this 14th Regt of Foot (Buckinghamshire) button may have been worn?
Is it likely to have been worn during the period 1867/69? It measures 25mm in diameter, has a fast shank and is by Firmin & Sons, London. Thanks, Donny B. |

This must have been a tricky one!
Never mind! I did manage to get some information on this button throuigh another Forum. If their information is correct, and it is the best information that I have at the moment, it was used during the 1855/1881 date range. That means that it probably is the button worn for the 1867/69 period which pleases me. Donny B. |

Hi Donny B,
Your button looks ground dug, and also dulled for campaign use. This regiment saw active service in New Zealand 1860-66. See my collection of Victorian buttons: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ictureid=12174 There is a brass button, and a "subdued" button for the 14th Regiment pictured. Cheers, Tinto |

Thanks for your response, Tinto.
There are some very nice buttons on your belt, there, and I was able to match mine up with your "subdued" one. That is a new term for me. I believe that my button was indeed ground dug.....in New Zealand, but I don't know just where. I was anxious to date it because a book that I have here shows an example of a different button with the "India" and "Waterloo" in banners, the 14 in Roman numerals and a crown above the tiger, and rather implies that it is an example from the 1867/69 period. I wanted to know if I had the right button. I think I do. Two companies of the 14th were stationed in Western Australia during 1867/69. Donny B. |

Please show us a good picture of the back of the button.
Yours may be an OR's button. They were discontinued in 1871. |

Yes, it is a good picture.
- It is an Other Ranks design. They were used 1855-1871. - Firmin & Sons was incorporated in 1875. - American collectors date "raised mark, depressed channel" backmarks around their civil war period. However, I do not know what period Firmin & Sons used them. I hope it helps. |
