Hmmm, don't know (of more importance to some people I know is will the EU requirement for gin to be at least 37% still stand?).

Only thirty seven percent?

Typo, I meant 37.5 %.
It's 40% in America I think. If I were a gin drinker I'd incline towards Navy Strength. |

Chiming In
Hi Darrell,
Having done a bit of time in the Royal Tank Regiment I can confirm that it was not something the Quartermaster would have held in stock or issued and ISTR that officers had to buy their uniforms, so certainly a private purchase. An award for exceptional performance, that never happened in my Regiment. The badge you posted looks like it has been cleaned/buffed very roughly, in a circular motion, with something quite abrasive. Privately purchased badges, of a lesser quality, were accepted in the Regiment and could be worn by any rank, including officers, and usually cleaned using Brasso and cardboard. Staybrite was not well liked. The images I have posted show a selection of badges worn during my service and includes a privately purchased one showing the amount of wear through 20 years of daily cleaning for comparison with the wear on your badge. Hope this helps. Kevin |

Hello.
Is the cloth cap badge you wore on a blue or black.background? If it's on a blue one, may I ask when and where you wore it please? Cheers Chris |

The background is black. They were issued for a Northern Ireland tour 90/91. Kevin |

Hi Kevin
Thank you for your reply and thank you very much for providing those details. Very helpful. Duly passed along to the badge owner. Similar to when I was a Royal Canadian Dragoon in that there probably were more privately purchased badges on black berets than there were the (anodized, slider) QM issue type, mainly the non-commissioned members. For the soldiers, shining the brass was preferable to the issue badge. Nice wear on your examples shown. regards Darrell
