Default Victorian Volunteer Medical Service Badge - Pre Federation

Victorian Volunteer Medical Service Badge - I think it was worn from 1870s onwards.

Not sure if it's a hat badge.

Enjoy!

Mick

Hi Derek,

It was worn by the Victorian Defence Force (Colony of Victoria) prior to Federation.

Thanks Mick. I've seen pics of a similar one mounted on a shako, as below.

It was actually used by the Victorian Constabulary "VR" Cartouche badge, of a style used by "Commissioned Officers" on their cross belt, pouch. There are variations to this plate, but the originals were "pressed" metal, shellbacked and made of Coin or Sterling Silver. Extremely Rare. c 1880 - (1947). It was worn by the Victoria Mounted Police, until the new uniform was introduced and the cross belt removed from service. Howvever, it was still used, on a cross belt pouch, for several ceremonial occasions until c1947.

Rick Grebert illustrates a badge that is "almost" identical to the one pictured, though not quite so compact in that the top flourish of the "R" does not curl around the right hand stroke of the "V".

Could it be one of the "variations" mentioned by rustyau?

Grebert calls his a badge of the Victorian Volunteer Medical Service (formed 1870's). He describes it as a sabretache and belt badge. He claims that the badge he has illustrated belonged to Major P. Kaye ( sounds like chewing gum, doesn't it) in the 1870's. He goes on to say that the badge was also worn by the Victorian Police.

His illustrated badge looks as though it was still on the sabretache when photgraphed.

I Man
