Default Transvaal Scottish

Hi all,

I thought I'd share my Transvaal Scottish collection with you; it may not be huge but I'm pleased

Feel free to comment and post your own, maybe go further back with Tvl Volunteers.

Hi Tinto,

many thanks.

Hi Ron,

some nice badges you've got there and it makes such a difference with the tartan backing.

Just a bit of history here, but the Transvaal Scottish are claiming 110 years since there formation in 1902, post Boer war, by the Duke of Atholl.
In actual fact, it was initially the Scottish Horse, which was disbanded in 1907.
The Duke of Atholl reformed 2 regiments of Scottish Horse in 1902, one SA and one GB.
He, as the Marquis of Tullibardine, had commanded the SH during the ABW.
I dont know when the Transvaal Scottish Volunteers were formed but of course they were the forerunners of the TS.
To this day, the TS wear the Murray of Atholl tartan and the TS pipers, Murray of Tullibarnine tartan.

Maybe someone can fill in the gap?

regards,

Iain

Iain,

Great collection, cant help with the gap but this is a link to some interesting info :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Mu...Duke_of_Atholl

I remember visiting Blair Castle many years ago and seeing a picture of one of the Dukes in his uniform as Honorary Colonel of the Liverpool Scottish.

Hi Peter,

nice to hear from you and thanks for the link. I did know the Duke of Atholl had recently died and was living in SA; I didnt know he had given his estates to charity.
My mother actually spent the war years in Dunkeld as She had family there, which is where the (GB) Scottish Horse were based. Its very close to Blair Atholl in Perthshire and I spent many a holiday in that area and Fife, when younger.
Its a beautiful part of Scotland with a lot of history.

regards,
Iain

Hi Iain, the two units were separate units. The Transvaal Scottish were an infantry unit and the Scottish Horse mounted. In 1907 it was felt that there were too many mounted units in the Transvaal, and the only ILH was retained. I hope this helps. Regards Andrew

Hi Andrew,

oops, thanks for putting that straight, but co incidentally the TS were also founded by the Duke of Atholl.

regards
Iain

Hi Guys

Some nice badges displayed, moved on the vast majority of my TS badges and plaid badges to a fellow forum member, a great unit with a long history.

Hi Brian,

thanks, but why did you get rid of your TS badges; are you now specialising in other areas?
