Colour is quite off putting and makes me think OSD but the stamp is more ORs and the slider is quite a surprise. I stress it is only my experience but all the OSD post 1922 Queens have been on blades.

Hello again Phil,

In my very limited experience, bronzing o/r's badges is the conmen's way, despite having a slider, they still refer to them as officers', having said that, there are quite a few regiments who did wear bronzed badges, over to the regimental experts ??

Incidently, I do have a very well made bronze and slidered cap star to the Worcesters and they were worn, opens the debate slightly me thinks.

Dave.

Phil,
I think it's just simply an ORs badge that has oxidised, brass (Gilding Metal) can go quite dark if left uncleaned and exposed to acidic air. Tabacco smoke can turn badges almost black, I don't smoke but in days gone by, a lot of local pubs would have badges on display!! Mind you I did grow up in Brecon!

Andy

According to this site, the 5th TF adopted a blackened version of this badge in the 1920s and 30s following on from their original blackened TF badge. I have not got one myself and this is the only reference I have seen to it. Fairly easy to 'make' one unfortunately.

I went through an old out of print regtl history of the Queens regt written post war and interestingly they discussed the Queens TF in the 1920s. While not the exact quote the gist of it was that by 1926 the regt had adopted colours, removed black buttons and jettisoned Rifle regt traditions to fall in line with the regular. This would have undoubtedly seen the end of black cap badges. I suspect that the regtl website's badge is a blackened one but not for wear by a TF Bn with a rifles lineage.

I have also heard of people putting brass badges in coffee grounds to 'bronze' them...
