Default R.A.S.C. Plastic badge & unusual backing

Fellow members,
The attached scan is of a 'standard' Stanley & Sons bakelite cap badge, but with an additional yellow bakelite plastic backing. This apears to have been handcut. It came with the 53rd Welsh Div patch and two WO rank badges. Supposedly they belong together but there is no provenance to them.

I've checked the RUC book without good result.
Why would a yellow backing be worn?

Thanks. Steve.

Yellow was the RASC arm of service collour and the WO1 badge was to have a backing of edging to it of Yellow. Now there were some WO2's that thought the order was for their badges as well and therefore backed their badges. You do get some who think if my rank badge should be backed then so should my cap badge.

I have known at least one WO1 (RSM) in the Corps of Royal Engineers who as he had a wreath round his crown when a QSMI then he should also have one round his Royal Arms, he therefore wore the Conductors and Master Gunner Class 1 badge of rank, for about 2 days.
