6th DG or Carabiners but why the hole?
Dear Al, Why the 'O' cut out? Was it an affectation of a dandy to reflect sunlight, make a noise or otherwise draw attention, I think I read of such yrs ago but can't remember the source?

A quick 'Google' has info claiming that stlye/design of button was only worn for a short time (1855 - 1870) , so could them being 'drilled' simply be a method of ensuring they could not accidently be sold/issued/worn ? .

Interestingly the hole is oval not round so hand cut...

MUST be a story here!
Can't see Ian putting on an obviously damaged button, 'voided' between legs, the Wilts dented or 'splashed' their buttons in memory of Carrickfergus.

Could it not be a more simple solution, that the initial stamping left the metal around the 'O' excessively thin, and the 'O' has just fallen out from a little polishing?
