Default Badge on WW2 Army documents case.

A friend has a documents case with a painted 'DZ' type badge - green/red/green

The only officer I can find of the same name as on the case, Col McFadden is Dr & Col J McFadden who served 1918-46.

Has anyone an inkling as to colours meaning?

Have I the right man?, our Army Lists are limited but the only 2 McFadden's I see are J & (J R in Cammeronians).

Marking of baggage when shipped overseas. It is marked with three coloured bars denoting the last two figures of the Unit's Serial Number. The colour reprsenting the teens digit with appear both above and below that of the units digit. Therefore Green, Light/Red, Bright/Green, Light would indicate 414. But to add to the confusion - if different shades of Green (ie Deep Bronze Green)and Red (Red Oxide of Iron) were to be used the numeral would be 878!
This is an extract from ACI's 10 May 44.

From the original document:

"The colours denoting figures are as follows:
(1) Red. bright. Q.D.
(2) Blue. Q.D.
(3) Yellow, Ammn.
(4) Green. Light. Q.D.
(5) Grey. Ammn.
(6) Buff. Q.D.
(7) Red. oxide of iron. Q.D.
(8) Deep bronze green
(9) White lead Q.D.
(10) Brown.dark. Q.D."
Comment. I assume QD is quick drying and that Ammn is Ammunition

I regret that I could not trace unit serial 29618. The closest I can get is 29613 which was 4th Bn Grenadier Guards in 6 Guards Tank Brigade 1944.

Outstanding! Do have any listings of these all-important serials?

That's excellent Tim. We can always rely on the Grey/Green! I'm about to become the possessor of a horde of WW2 photos and documents relating to and the property of a SNCO who served in FSS in PAIFORCE and Nigeria. It will eventually be passed to the Archives at Chicksands. Mike
