Default French? WW1? Officers?????

Hi all

Prompted by viewing some footage of French WW1 veterans on YouTube and other related material, I remembered getting this "relic" way back.

It would no doubt have a story behind it and, while soldiers would often exchange buttons and badges, how would the man explain this to the stores department?

So is this French (the colour would suggest this) and is it part of an officer's uniform or other ranks? A very quick Google search has been not very helpful on this occasion and even entering my search in French wasn't much better.

It's completely valueless but the story behind it must would be well worth hearing....

OK, have done a bit more work...It would seem that this is a "patte de col" (or "collet") from the early uniform.

Can anyone confirm this please?

It is very possibly a souvenir, taken in this case possibly by a German soldier, which has now found it's way to you.

My justification for this answer is that a few years ago I purchased a trio to a 19th London bloke and with the medals was an assortment of paraphernalia, which included two epaulettes he had cut from the uniform of a dead German, whilst walking over the bodies after clearing a trench.

This was documented in a letter to his parents, along with the other bits and pieces he kept as souvenirs.

Regards.

Brian

Hi Brian

Many thanks for that. Yes, I'd worked out that it might have had a slightly grisly back story...

I've got German buttons and other bits. Some time ago I was asked if I could help with some research on a couple of German items in a local collection, including a dog tag. Having only recently found that there is a fairly comprehensive website for basic searches, I had a look.

The current owner was puzzled about a small nick out of the edge of this tag, as I was. A quick search showed that there was an obvious, if tragic, reason for this damage...

My question about the item was to which unit it belonged and what period it dates from. I've tentatively attributed it to the 16e Regiment d'Infanterie but I would like to hear from one of our French members.

I've lived in France and my parents both have taught French for many years, so we'll see if my next post gets a response from them!

Hi,
Far from being a specialist but, as a Froggy, I am happy to answer to this call. You are right this cloth badge is a "patte de col" or collar badge of the 16th French Territorial Infantry Regiment worn by OR from 1915 to 1917.
More informations :

Kind regards from France

Merci beaucoup!

I'm so pleased to now know what it is. I'd thought it was 16e R.I. but the Territorial bit makes more sense. The white numbers had me fooled...

With an attribution I can now look deeper into this!

Cordialement

Ray
