Default Brown Beret Query

I have had this beret for a while now and am wondering what badge would have been worn in it? It has a slot cut in for a slider. I think I've seen them with RAC badge but not sure.

Thanks and Merry Xmas to all,

Bill

It looks very much to me like it’s a Royal Wessex Yeomanry beret.

Thanks for the replies.

Would a Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry or Gloucestershire Hussars Badge go in there too?

Regards, Bill

I’m not sure about the Gloucestershire Hussars, Bill, but my understanding is that the Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry wore a standard dark blue beret.

Thanks Andy,

was just trying top save myself some money on a badge for it as the RWxY badges cost quite a bit more.

Pending final design, approval and universal issue of the Royal Wessex Yeomanry cap badge, the badge of the Royal Armoured Corps was apparently worn, perhaps for a limited time?

A Sqn Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry was part of Royal Yeomanry until 2014 and wore a RY badge on a navy blue beret. They then joined B Sqn in the Royal Wessex Yeomanry, who currently wear a brown beret with a black badge backing to the new Royal Wessex Yeomanry badge, which is now worn by all the squadrons, regardless of their origins.

A Sqn became Y Sqn of the Royal Wessex Yeomanary when they left the Royal Yeomanary.

Under the latest Defence reorganisation they are ceasing to be a Sqn in their own right and becoming part of C RGH Sqn of the Royal Wessex Yeomanary providing 2 Troops.

This leaves them as the junior unit at the Swindon TA Centre so a lot of the historical collection may have to be moved down to Old Sarum where the other Royal Wiltshire Yomanary Sqn in the Wessex Yeomanary (B Sqn) is based.

Default Beret

Bill
Just a thought, you say you've had the beret some time.
Bearing in mind that the 1st pattern RWY cap badge was pin back. Some of the squadrons wore that beret with their original cap badges prior to its issue . If you Google and look under images you will find them

Thanks for the replies, they are very interesting.

I have trawled the internet and have seen this beret with black square worn by Royal Wiltshire Yeomanry (with red background to the badge), the Royal Wessex Yeomanry, Dorset Yeomanry and with RAC badge (and also with support arm cap badges too).

I have a spare RWY staybrite badge so might try to make up a red felt background to display it until I get a RWxY badge for it.

Thanks again for all your help,

Regards, Bill

I think you’ll find the ‘red background’ in the above photo is actually a paper poppy worn around Remembrance Day pinned by the metal cap badge through a black badge backing. Having said that, when I acted as DS on a B Sqn (R Wilts Yeo) R Wx Yeo exercise c2006, they were wearing the Prince of Wales feathers cap badge on a red tombstone backing, so it would be correct for that period.

When I asked my Daughter who knows a member of the Squadron about the backing, I was told it was a quarter inch edge of red around the the shape of the badge. Still waiting for one, have to make my own.

Thanks for that, I did actually find something on the net stating it was an outline of the badge so made up my own.
