The oval titles used for the various battalions were standard with N/S lugs on the inner rim braized to the various city numbers. The loops/lugs for attaching them to the tunic were E/W.

Yes, its the little tabs N/S where the numbers are braised, this one doesnt have one to the S. Apart from that its an excellent title.

correct, but the little tab at the top of the `1` usually is repeated at the bottom, but in this case it is not there for some reason. I wondered if anyone had seen this before.

Manchester Officer's Badges
Attached are pics of two pre-1923 Manchester Regiment cap badges. One I bought off Harribobs on e-bay (right hand side, with the tangs). I'd like to know anyone's comments on the other one, the lighter coloured one with the pin. Looks also to be officers but I'm not sure. The pin is identical to the pins used on CEF officer's badges but tangs seem to be predominant on British OSD badges...?
Cheers, Ian. |

The pin and clasp may well have been added at a later date. They were often added by jewellers so that the badge could be removed with ease and worn on civiliam clothing as a lapel bagde or broach. Tangs often broke so it may have been a repair.

Brooched O.S.D.'s
I have one bronze with a brooch fitting, I took it from a poorly conditioned cap a year or so ago when I first started collecting bronze badges.
I can't say if this brooch fitting was replaced by a jeweller or not but I can say that there are no signs of any rework being carried out, it's a first class finish on the reverse. Just my two-pentheth worth............................... Dave. Last edited by davec2; 06-04-09 at 12:23 PM. |

The Mancs badge with brooch has a finish that I have never seen before on OSD badges. Is it just the pic? Dont know what to make of it.
To get to that Glosters badge, I dont think that is really a Gaunt made badge. The quality is nothing close to what their OSD badges are known for, and the mark stamped into the reverse doesnt seem to look right. Further, the brooch is not of the type normally seen on British badges. If this was indeed removed from the cap that it was originally on, it may be a bazaar made example? CB |
