7th Yorks
I finally found a 7th Yorks. However there is a bit of a 'but'. It has had the Bn numeral erased. I remember that Dejayvu had something similiair and will email him for comment. He had a theory that this was done after the 2 Bns merged before the 7/8th badge was produced.
There is no trace of blacking on my badge and it appears to be GM as issued. Again unlike all the fake 8th Bn ones that you see it does not have a void under the crown. Alan Last edited by Alan O; 22-03-08 at 09:55 AM. Reason: typo |

That's exactly what I'm looking for. I like those fat edges to the rear of the wreath too.

Is my memory right, was Mr.Morrison based in Leicestershire ?
I wonder if anyone else used to get Laurie Archers lists, I think I have mentioned previously he used to list known duds/repros ( call them what you like ) as he became aware of them, on his lists and very useful they were. I last corresponded with Laurie in the 1970`s, he had a lot of reference material ( indluding I think notes made by Captain Phillip Durand on various badges) and I believe a large collection. You wonder what happens to all the reference material individuals built up in the past. I recently discovered the whereabouts of the Usher archive ( Harry Usher was a well know collector to the Lancashire Regiments and had been at Gallipoli with the Manchesters )The current owner of the archives was able to give me some information about a badge which I have and which I think was originally in the Usher collection. What a pity a lot of old information seems to disappear,it might give answers to a lot of questions which arise today. P.B.

Alan, as requested please find attached scans of my ?bn Leeds Rifles badge. I have not been able to establish exactly why the number was stamped out but i have been advised by a reliable source that the 7th and 8th bn`s were merged unofficially for a short period due to high casualties. The first WW saw the 7th and 8th bn`s split into two seperate battalions (1/7,2/7,1/8 & 2/8) along with each being provided with a reserve bn (3/7 & 3/8). The 3/7 absorbed the 3/8 in 1916 but other than this i can find no official record. This is not to say it did not happen unofficially. Other units that had `temporary` titles include the Norsets! At El Kut the Norfolks and Dorsets formed an unofficial bn from the reduced number of their beseiged battalions to form a single unit.
I have attached a few scans of the unnumbered badge for the Leeds Rifles for info. I have also started a new thread on the Leeds Rifles as i have over 16 badges to the unit that will be of interest. PS, the void below the crown is not a definative indication of a repro as many of the very early badges were only ever struck with this void! However, the majority of them had a horseshoe shaped reinforcing rod inserted on the back of the badge to strengthen this week point. Regards, Dave Last edited by Alan O; 23-08-08 at 07:51 PM. |

Leeds Rifles Badges
Following Alan Owens query on the 8th bn Leeds Rifles i thought it may be appropriate to start a thread on the Leeds Rifles as a whole. I have many badges to the West Yorks of which i have a few examples to the Leeds Rifles. Cheers, Dave

Officers pattern badges in silver and blackened brass. The Silver one is the most common type. The blackened brass is unfretted making it peculiar to use in the Boer war.

7th bn badges in wm and BB. The 7th , 8th & 7th/8th badges were issued in three versions to suit the dress uniform being worn. They were issued in brass, blackened brass and white metal all for use by other ranks.

8th bn in white metal. I have this badge in brass and blackened brass also but cannot lay my hands on them at the moment
?bn. the number has been hammered omitted but it has not been simply hammered out as the area where the number should have been is textured and not flat Last edited by Alan O; 23-08-08 at 06:58 PM. |

From 1908 Leeds Rifles (and Liverpool Rifles [6th Kings]) officers wore a silver bugle on a black cord boss - actually the same badge as the Rifle Brigade officers.
I couldn't therefore swear whether my Lpl Rifles badge is a Lpl or Leeds Rif but I suspect most likely a RB ! |
