RMLI Officer's rank insignia
Can anyone tell me until when the officer's rank insignia was worn on the cuff - as attached - in the Royal Marines?
I know that this was the case during WW1, but until when did this practice continue? Any insights appreciated! |

Officially in 1917 I think, unofficially much later. Regards

Thank you Simon for the reply! I have a photo which I believe to be from 1922-23, so convincingly beyond 1917.

The abolition date was 1920, although it would have taken at least a year or two to filter through to everyone across the overseas garrisons. The instruction was given under Army Order (AO) 539 of 1920. Although the RMLI were issued their orders by the Admiralty, I suspect that they would’ve issued similar orders not long after if not at the exact same time. There is an archive of orders to Royal Marines in a website online, I’ll see if I can find anything.

This is the online archive - excuse me for not looking through it, but hopefully fairly straight forward to trace - see Illustrations, and RMRO etc Orders of various types. Regards Mike

See page 1 of link below (5. Badges of Rank) : https://rmhistorical.com/files/conte...s%207-1922.pdf No doubt more information can be found in this impressive archive, helping advise us of potential earlier move from cuff to shoulder. Mike |
