So rather than start a new thread I thought with your indulgence I would post my latest find here. A really lovely little badge just arrived in the mail - an officers (?) bronzed cap badge to the 63rd Halifax Rifles. I think this is MM191 in Mazeas. Lovely quality and detail to this small badge.

Okay Gents,

The second of three badges to the 63rd Halifax Rifles that I recently acquired and I'm rather excited about this one. A circa 1910 helmet plate in HM silver and not listed in Mazeas. Just added to my Canadian album but shared her with some more views. This is the first 'helmet plate' I have owned, I guess it had to happen sometime.....!

Those look like fixings for a cross belt plate to me.

Thanks for that. I'm certainly not apposed to it being a cross-belt plate, although the design for plates known to this unit are different. Look forward to any other comments or thoughts?

Looking at the unique design of the nuts on the screw posts, I think Phil has the id. The covered nuts would protect the garment over which a cross belt was worn. I have not seen that type of nut on the helmet plates that have crossed my path.

The covered nuts comments certainly make sense. Some of these topics can get complicated, but I guess when we are dealing with rare items over 100 years old it is just the nature of the game.

It does beg the question though; do we classify such badges based on the design, their fitting (assumed original) or a combination?

If nothing else it gives us plenty to do and some great pieces to collect.

I have badges to the 30th BC Horse that are identical in size. One has lugs and the other two have screw posts with the covered nuts., The last are on the front of a cross belt and the pouch.
When you get more experience with Canadian badges, you may get a "feel" for their uses and and an understanding of the different fasteners that can be found on them.
Compared to other Canadian units, I really don't think 63rd Halifax Rifles badges are all that scarce. There are a number of dealers listing them, and I have seen many at shows.

Hi Gents,

Keeping along the lines of this thread, another new addition to the 63rd arrived the other day (see photos attached). This time a brass pouch badge (Mazeas PB221). At 40mm x 38mm, the difference in size (smaller), design (no 63) and fittings (lugs not posts) is quite distinct from the badge that started this thread which is more akin to a helmet plate than the pouch badge suggested.
