Hello Ian,

Thank you for that. One of the real joys of collecting and of course being a member of this sterling forum is that one can share new finds and of course ones collection. After all none of us can own everything, so being able to share in one another's triumphs (and failures) is all part of the course. Knowing likeminded collectors who can truly appreciate ones latest find makes it all the more worthwhile.

For some unknown reason I was expecting this badge to be bigger. No idea why I had that frame of mind, perhaps it was because I had only previously seen photographs of it before and had made an incorrect assumption as we sometimes do. So tomorrow when the light is good I will plan to take another photo that better gives the size of the beauty some perspective.

Roy.

Roy.

I know nothing about your lovely badge but it is really nice and I am very pleased for you. Well done. I love the CEF badges and have nearly put together all the actual fighting units. My Grails at the moment are the four or five I still need.

Thanks for posting. I applaud you and your collecting values. Well done.

TRT

Hi TRT,

Thank you so much for your kind words, very much appreciated. Let us know what your 'Grail' items are? It is always interesting to find out which badges have eluded collectors thus far.

For those interested I just snapped a photo of the Gordons with a couple of other badges to help give a little perspective of its size.

Cheers, Roy.

Please forgive my ignorance gents but as I'm a self proclaimed novice in Canadian badge collecting my reference material is a little on the scant side. So in regarding the 50th Gordons Infantry Draft, I'm having a little difficulty in pinning down some basic information on the CEF history of this unit and was wondering if a more knowledgable member could assist?

I have found some basic information of the pre 1914 Gordon Highlanders but suspect this would not especially be applicable to the cap badge at the centre of this thread. Any basic information would be much appreciated.

Cheers, Roy.

Hi Roy,
As the badge says, the militia unit, 50th Gordon Highlanders , could only supply enough men for a draft rather than raise enough for a battalion, so they sent a draft overseas. So did the 11 th Iris Fusiliers. My guess is they directly reinforced the 16th battalion.
As these badge seem to be original with a pin suggests to me that it is not a cap or head dress badge but probably a kilt pin, although the pin never looks stout enough for that?? Maybe a sweetheart type badge.
Would love to see photographic evidence of how this badge was worn, there's a challenge for everybody out there.
Cracking badge Roy. Did it come from Arctic medals? Hope you haggled a bit!!!
All the best
Dan

I don't know how Arctic Medals will ever sell some of those badges at his prices but I never thought of haggling!

Hi Chaps,

Many thanks for all the extra info. And Dan I like your 'challenge' - yes it would be great if someone somewhere could find a photograph showing this badge in use - anyone..?

Cheers, Roy.
