Little known Chester memorial to WW1 soldiers
I came across this when surfing the web the other day:
https://www.thebluecoat-chester.org....y-galeka-bell/ I have passed the school on many occasions and have never noticed the bell before. I have now and some pictures are attached. An interesting and little known memorial, I wonder how many others exist across the country and are pretty well forgotten ? P.B.

Hi Peter and all
I have walked past (and entered) the Bluecoats many, many times - but never realised the importance of the bell. Chester is such a historic city - the link between the Bluecoats and neighbouring cells buried in the City walls is known as 'The Bridge of Sighs'. The bridge is still intact and in view from Northgate Street as you cross the Canal. The small window type openings in the walls (to the left) are difficult to see. Apparently condemned prisoners were taken from the cells, across the bridge for their last rights etc. Many were hung from the old Northgate, now replaced, one of several sites for public executions in the city. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bridge_of_Sighs,_Chester http://www.cc-publishing.co.uk/Archives/sighs.html This link may not work - but here goes https://www.chesterchronicle.co.uk/n...sters-12381644 All the best Mike (a proud Cestrian) |

Thanks Simon and Mike,
Mike what a pity that they cant put a plaque on the wall of the building telling the story of the bell and that they cant remove all the vegetation that must be having some detrimental effect on the historic bridge. Peter
