3rd Prince of Wales' Canadian Dragoons
Looking for opinions or comments on this badge. Picked it up a few years ago, and always wondered about it. Not the Scully die, obviously, and it is brass overlays on w.m. rather than the other way round. Wayne Marway thought Militia period when I showed it to him 2-3 years ago, and it resembles the pattern in Mazeas's Militia book, but it still niggles at me.

As you asked for opinions, here's one. I think the badge is bad.

Kinda the basis for that niggling feeling; I'm thinking it is too.

Hi Doug, For posterity and future reference, could you list the characteristics that make this badge a copy?

Looks good to me
It looks good to me, nice detail, especially in the scroll, defined letters and the plumes as well, the little bumps in the scroll are usually less defined in copies.

The badge does have nice quality. It is heavy and appears to have some age, but it is the pattern and construction that makes me wonder. I think it's obvious it is a British-made badge. The "ICH DIEN" scroll arms are the tight, high angled ones seen on Welsh Regiment badges like this one from this forum.
Mazeas has similar looking badges illustrated in his Militia badges book (MC10 & MC11). His drawings look like the crown is overlaid on the plume. The badge in question is larger than MC10, though, and while MC11 is the same size as mine, it is shown with no scroll. MC11 doesn't have the tight scroll arms either; they are the flatter kind seen on the Canadian 3rd PWCD badge.

My thoughts are similar to David's. The 'suspect' badge doesn't match any known English or Canadian manufacturer in die details or construction. This is also true when compared to the earlier, (MC11) as well as the later (C9) badges.
What really makes me skeptical, is that these used to come up every week on Ebay UK for about 10 pounds. |
