Default Mystery Victorian badge

I have had this badge for many years and would like to know more about it. It is quite heavy and has never tarnished, as you can se the retaining pin to the rear is missing, thanks, John.

Smile Irish badge

This badge is a similar one to a Victorian Staffordshire Police badge which I have, I think it was worn by Police Inspectors. I would think this is the Irish equivalent.

I was about to say the same; Connaught Rangers. I saw the same thread today looking into Welsh Guards Pagri.

Simon.

Nice badge!

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think it's a Royal Irish Regiment O/R's glengarry. The Connaught's wore the Maid of Eirin centre on their badge.

Always happy to learn!

I believe this to be a Royal Irish Rgt (18th Foot) pagri badge (see lot 41 Bosley's auction 12 June 2002 WM die struck with pin).

The Connaught Rangers Pagri was similiar but used a maid of Eireann harp as illustrated in Jourdain's history of that rgt. published 1927.

Whether this is genuine or not I could not say due to the quality of the image pus the fact that I have never been able to handle one.

John

This is indeed the style of badge worn on the pagri by the Royal Irish Regiment. I have only ever seen die stamped versions sold at auction. As a pagri badge it is fair to speculate that cast versions may have been made “in-theatre’ however cast badges could also be copies of course. I do not know enough about this item to know what to think of cast versions.

John,

I should add I have not seen that this badge has been faked, so worth hanging onto in my opinion untill future research gives us better knowledge.

John,

Seen a couple of re-strikes of this badge floating about over the years. Castings are suspect, I think, as a rule of thumb. But you are right it could of been made 'in country' and therefore a minefield!

I do have a good officer's one in my collection but good o/r's are harder to find.
