Default South African Boer War Town Guard Badge

Hello

Can anyone help me with the identification of this town guard badge that I have in my small side collection of South African badges. It does not appear in Colin Owen's book of South African insignia.

I am assuming the 23 represents the 23rd Company and therefore it is from a large town/city, probably from Cape Town.

The SG has me stumped, I have seen similar badges such as 25th Company Cape Town Guard (Standard Bank) slouch hat badge so I am assume the SG may represent the name of a business that raised its own town guard company.

Any information would be appreciated.

Regards

Dennis

The Castle museum in Cape Town has an extensive collection of Town Guard badges. They put out a publication on the Town Guards of the Cape Peninsula 1901-1902 compiled by A.M.Davey. There is a list of all the units and #23 is listed as Scott's, so i suspect the SG stands for Scott's Guard.
This was an Infantry unit of the Cape Town metropolitan area.

Hi Dennis, indeed a very nice find. I have one in my collection and other than the one in the Castle Museum, I don't know of anyone else with one(I am sure they are out there, but very scarce). Regards Andrew

Thanks for all information and the positive comments gents. I have just located a copy of the Castle Museum publication which includes the badge information and will be looking forward reading it in about 2 weeks when it gets here.
