Identification of cap badge

Hi all I never met my Grandad however my father always talked about him so I feel that i know him sadly my father died three years ago. so i cannot ask him any further questions
he was in the 2nd world war and i believe he was involved in the D Day push and the action that followed up to victory.
i think he was in a tank regement
name John Clough patterson, from washington ,tyne and wear

23rd Hussars by the beret badge but sure a Cavalry expert will be able to confirm.

As already correctly identified by Simon, this is a 23rd Hussars cap badge.


Firmin and Gaunt die patterns pictured below - when worn on the beret the badge had a green backing.

Great photo. As already identified the 23 Hussars in the Royal Armoured Corps 11 Armoured Division judging from the shoulder insignia, fought on DDay with the 21 Army Group. 11 Corps we heavily involved in the fighting around Caen and carried on to fight in Belgium, Holland and Germany.

It should be relatively easy for you to find out more about your Grandfather's service the exploits of the 6 war raised Cavalry units are well documented ( only Britain could think of naming "new" Cavalry regiments Hussars ( 23rd and 26th) Lancers ( 27th and 24th) and Dragoons ( 22nd and 25th ). They were all raised in 1940 and were disbanded in 1946. Depending on when your Grandfather joined up will determine whether he only saw service in the 23rd Hussars - but it might have been that he was already serving with the 10th Royal Hussars or the 15th/18th Hussars which provided a cadre of men to form the new 23rd Hussars. I believe the Regt was also involved in the liberation of the Belsen concentration camp. Definitely worth researching him further. Good luck. Tim
