Rough Riders
I have this badge made by Angus and Coote, a jewelry company founded in Sydney in 1895, and still going today. Is it just a trade badge?
Measures about 57 m.m. x 40m.m. Can anyone shed some light on it please? Period it may be from? Thanks Geoff |

Hi Geoff,
From the Australian point of view it is just a trade badge, introduced in Standing Orders for Dress 1935 for Rough Riders of Remount Sections of the Permanent Military Forces. Only eight (8) were required each year so I imagine they are rather scarce. In 1940 the finish was changed to oxidised copper and the conduct of skill-at-arms testing and award of prizes and badges finished in the 1940-41 training year. However they were also worn by the City of London Yeomanry (Rough Riders, with the spur in white metal and the letters in gilding metal. Yours appears very similar in design and markings to the oxidised copper examples I have seen, which differ in the back of the Rs and in general construction from the British badges which have the letters made separately from the spur. Hi Geoff & Keith
Ive now found mine, its about the same as yours, the measurements vary by a mill or 2, made in die cast brass with a flat rear surface but without the Angus & Coote makers mark. The detail in all the ends is the same as yours. Ive had this one from the early 70's. Mine has a brass backing plate and a sprung cotter pin and still has its price tag of $8.00 !! Regards Phil. Thanks Artynut for that comparison, I've seen a few varieties of that badge over the years, and always thought it a very handsome badge.
Phil thanks for that, is your badge oxidised/brass - pic? |
