Default 41st Foot suspect plate

Pre-1908 badges are a mystery to me, so I know nothing about this badge, and a quick skim through K&K has not enlightened me.

Please can anyone confirm identification, and venture an opinion as to whether or not it is fake. I suspect the latter.

Thanks, Stephen.

Hi Stephen
The badge looks ok to me, but it is probably Militia not 41st Foot.
The Militia Regiment with the precedence number 41 was the 1st Devon. From the pattern, I would guess circa the 1860s tho' I cannot confirm the oak leaf surround in my notes. Perhaps someone else can help here. Will continue "digging" in the hope of confirming the identity. Nice shako plate tho'. Regards Jeff

Default 41st Militia

Jeff,

Thanks for the information. A pleasant surprise if genuine after all.

It will get moved on in the future if anyone is interested.

Stephen.

Still looking : The only other Unit I can trace with the precedent 41 is the Warwickshire Volunteers, but again not shown in K&K and no mention of Oak Leaf surround in Wyatt's book. Puzzling.

Hi Jean-Marie
Thanks for that. Very interesting ; a nice officers shako and badge of the 41st Warwickshire Vols, but at £1,070.00 wow ! what a price !!
This one definitely 1869-78 period, Stephen's badge is ORs and/or possibly slightly earlier. Regards Jeff

PS: Later Warwickshire Rifle Volunteers badges confirm the oak-leaf wreath surround.

That Warwickshire Shako has been knocking about for an age. Bantam and I pointed out to the vendor that it was not 41st foot when he first put it up.
I've not seen many other examples of the ORs version coming up so it could be a good one.
Hwyl,
Kevin

G'day Stephen.

I claim no authority or great knowledge of these particular badges, but comparing your offering with those I do have, I too believe it's kosher.

If as stated it is a militia item, then well done, a splendid find.

Regards.

Brian
