Default Wilshire Regt. Bosleys 1st of March 2017

Can anyone help me date lot 196, The Wiltshire Regt. glengarry, without battle honours. I have looked through the relevant Dress Regs, but there is no description of such a badge, unless I have missed something vital.
Thank you for your help.

Hi David & MAP
I must say I tend to agree with MAP re Lot 196 and rather suspect that Bosleys have mis-identified this badge.
Dress Regs for 1883 clearly stipulate a silver cross with a gilt cypher on a blue velvet centre of which known examples exist. This particular badge also incorporated all the honours subsequently shown on the gilt badge (Lot 195) introduced sometime before 1891 when the Dress Regs were altered accordingly.
I would imagine the buyer you mentioned David knew something that Bosleys probably didn't and thus secured for himself a very rare variation !
In my opinion, Lot 196 is a rare and possibly unique sealed pattern originally intended for the 2nd Battalion (or possibly the 3rd) but never adopted ... those in Lot 195 & 197 respectively being the ones that were finally issued. Would very much like to hear from the specialist you mention. Regards Jeff

Hi David
Thanks for that. Yes, you have an excellent Offs Forage cap badge there (from Bosleys I see). Congratulations.
As far as I know, the "Wardrobe" has an example of the 1st Pattern silver glengarry badge (SBYRW 32001) tho' the measurements are not given. It has a faded blue velvet centre.
I did see another elsewhere and on the Web but cannot locate them now. Regards Jeff

In case members are wondering about the "Wardrobe" collection, while I have no doubt both David and Jeff have wardrobes (perhaps containing badges) it is the Museum of The Rifles, Berkshire and Wiltshire in The Wardrobe Salisbury Cathedral Close that is being referred to!

Hello Jeff, Thanks for your thoughts. Looking at the dress regs for 1883 & 1891 it says of the Forage cap badge that it is in embroidery, but then goes on to say 1st & 3rd Bns in gilt metal, the cypher and coronet in silver. There are no battle honours on the embroidered version, although it does have a coronet above. I take your point about an unadopted pattern and also wonder about the possibility that it might be from the strange period 1881 - 1883.
The glengarry descriptions are quite clear in all the regulations Silver, then Gilt, with honours.

Hello 49lassiepen,
I bought it, but wasn't sure if members talked about auction purchases. Having read this thread, I can see that they do. Apologies for being mysterious.
Next time you see me at Bosleys, say hello.
PS your Wiltshire collection is very good.
Regards,
MAP
