WW2 Officers Merchant Navy badge with purple underlay to crown...Chaplain or Doctor??

This is another item that i will be offering on here soon, just wondered can anyone confirm why it has purple under crown ?? never seen this before,i thought maybe Chaplain, doctor ??? or possibly engineer as an after thought...any ideas ??
