SMCC or SMGG badge?
Hi All
Can anybody id this badge please? It is similar to Owens 1737, 1738, 1739 & 1742. I am not even sure of what the letters are, either SMCC or SMGG, but I think it is SMCC. Thanks in advance. Cheers, Alex |

An interesting badge, I agree with you SMCC. However what it stands for is another question Sudan Motor Corps Company??? must admit scratching the barrel here! Brian |

My guess would be the 'Standard Motor Car Company', a British company long since disappeared from the scene.
Alternatively the 'Standard Motor Car Club' which exists for enthusiasts of that brand of car. JohnG |

Hi Guys
Thanks for the answers, but I am pretty sure this will be an obscure SA army badge from WWI. The 4 similar examples shown in Owen's book are for the SASC & Motor Transport Corps and I have never seen a badge of this design anywhere other than in SA books. S??? Motor Cycle Corps??? but that wouldn't explain the car grill. Stellenbosch Motor Car Corps . Cheers, Alex |

Hi Alex,
Going through some other posts and see Charl has a s/t (2 over SMCC) so these could be connected... https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...4&d=1421617680 |

Still does no help to what it stands for
As far as I am aware there was a Motor Car Company that was formed in the Transvaal and sent to GSWA. Also there was a Southern force and a Northern force in GSWA, so maybe your badge is for the Southern Motor Car Company in GSWA |

My observations sees the badge in the shape of a car radiator, so I would say very likely related to something automobile - club or maker or????
Interesting that the backing reminds me of the RAMC backing in color. Terry |

There were a few SA units that wore badges like this in WWI, just with different letters. Cheers, Alex |

Thanks Alex! Could it be am ambulance unit maybe?
Terry PS - If so, it should be sent to me immediately so as not to contaminate some other person's collection!!! Terry |

Terry,
It has NOTHING to do with Ambulance or anything Medical |

OK, that was only a guess on my part. The other thing I noticed is that the letters seem be rather crudely done compared to the rest of the badge. In fact the "S:" almost looks as if it was done as an afterthought??? Again, just a guess form looking at it.
